Oskar Schlechter was born in Herne in 1993 and graduated from the Walter-Gropius-Berufskolleg in Bochum with a specialization in art and design. In 2015 he began his photography studies at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Dortmund and in the following years he was involved in projects in which he increasingly dealt with portrait and documentary photography. In 2017, for example, he documented truck drivers at work in the Herne area and in the following year gained his first experience as a photo editor at the OSTKREUZ agency in Berlin. Today, he considers this time to have had a significant influence on his style and approach to his photo projects.
After moving to Leipzig in 2021, he started to work intensively on the topic of light pollution and finished his studies in 2022 with the project DARKLESS, a work on darkness and the effects of light
pollution on flora, fauna and humans. This work appeared as an article on Zeit-Online and as a feature on ARTE. Since then he has been working as a freelance photographer and art director.
